INTRODUCTORY COURSE

The Introductory Course is the first step to gain an in-depth understanding of Monty’s concepts. Students from various equine backgrounds are welcome to take part, as there are no prerequisites. For those of you with little or no horse knowledge, we recommend prior participation in the H101 Clinic.

The Introductory Course is designed to provide you with a well-rounded knowledge in the basics of horse care, performance, breeding, feeding and nutrition, with a strong emphasis on horse psychology. As the foundation of Monty’s work and prerequisite for the Advanced Course, you will learn the method of Join-Up as it relates to various environments. You will have the opportunity to build your skills in Dually halter work, long-lining, herding exercises and loading.

Initially you will spend two weeks learning theory in horse psychology in the classroom, watching demos of horse work and gaining hands on experience.

Following this you will return home to continue practicing what you have learned and submit videos of your practical work to receive feedback. It is also during this time that you will study theory from your manual. When we determine that you are ready for your practical exams, you will be invited to return for your practical and written exams. On successful completion of which you will graduate from the Introductory Course.

Included in the course cost is several months of distance learning and an online subscription to the Monty Roberts Online University to support your continuing education in Monty’s methods.

HORSEMANSHIP 101

2 days. Cost €300

For those new to horses, returning after a long break or trying to overcome fear, these two days will help you become safe and comfortable around horses. Classroom discussion will provide an introduction to how horses think and behave and practical sessions will teach you how to approach, halter, lead, groom and move safely around a horse.

You will learn the basic concept behind the Dually™ halter and after watching Join-Up® demonstrations, will experience a guided round pen session to feel the power of inter-species communication.

Key Learning Points: Non-violent approach to working with a horse, the Language of Equus, building a trust-based partnership, approaching, touching and handling a horse, how horses learn, think and see, Join-Up in the round pen, Grooming a horse, how to fit and use the Dually™ Training Halter, Spatial awareness, breathing and intention.

JOIN-UP

4 days. Cost €550

An introduction to the language of ‘Equus.’ Classroom discussion will cover horse evolution, behavior and language. The Join-Up® process will be demonstrated and broken down in various exercises, before you get the chance to complete several Join-Ups with different horses.

You will learn how to use the Dually halter to establish a relationship where the horse leads willingly and respects your space. At the end of the four days you will have the tools to create an effective, trust-based partnership with your horse.

Key Learning Points: Non-violent approach to working with the horse, the language of ‘Equus’, building a trust-based partnership, how horses learn, Join-Up and Follow Up™, Dually halter work, Round pen work.

EFFECTIVE LONG LINING

2 days. Cost €300

Long Lining has numerous benefits for training and conditioning horses. This class aims to teach you these benefits, the advantages of long-lining over single-line lunging and the skills required to long-line effectively.

You will benefit most from taking this class after the Join-Up clinic, as the round pen skills have their roots in Join-Up. The two classes are always scheduled together.

Key Learning Points: Non-violent approach to working with a horse, the language of ‘EQUUS’, benefits of long lining with two lines, disadvantages of single line lunging, Tacking up and attaching double long lines, working the horse on double long lines, different speeds and directions, different locations, ongoing double long line training.

MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING TRAINING

DO YOU EVER WONDER HOW TO HELP THOSE YOU SERVE TO SEE AND EMBRACE THE NEED FOR CHANGE?

A normal part of change is ambivalence – feeling two ways about it. The challenge of facilitating change more effectively may involve making some changes in your approach.

Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative conversation style that allows people opportunities to resolve their ambivalence while strengthening their own motivation and commitment to change. This course will invite you to learn some introductory skills of Motivational Interviewing in a beautiful farm environment that utilizes horses to illustrate the key concepts.

For 20 years, Monty Roberts (originator of Join-up®) and Bill Miller (psychologist-founder of Motivational Interviewing) have been exploring parallels in their methods. In this unique opportunity you will work with horses to learn Motivational Interviewing and discover the parallels of their work for yourself! Monty Roberts Certified Instructor, Claire Connaghan, and her horses will welcome you to their beautiful farm in Donegal, Ireland. Kris Robins will serve as your primary instructor. She has been studying Motivational Interviewing for 25 years and has also been learning Monty Roberts’ methods since 2011. Through demonstrations and supported practice, Kris will help you learn some core skills of Motivational Interviewing, with horses partnering as your teachers!

Kris, Claire, and other Monty Roberts Certified Instructors will help you understand and explore:

  1. The importance of the underlying spirit in working successfully in a willing partnership, whether with horses or people.
  2. Methodologies to prevent the development of resistance and deal effectively with any discordant behavior that may occur.
  3. How to develop both confidence and importance as determinants of successful change.
  4. The critical components of a helping partnership that eschews all forms of coercion and violence.
